'Near CLERY-sur-SOMME, on the 39th August 1918, in company with Lieutenant McMillan, this man performed very valuable service in locating and destroying enemy machine gun posts. Under severe machine gun fire, he went forward assisted in totally dislodging 4 posts with bombs and his revolver. He afterwards gave valuable assistance in organising and establishing forward posts after the enemy had been expelled. During the 29th/30th and 31st this sterling soldier has set a splendid example of bravery and determination. As a company scout, his reconnaissance work has been invaluable to his Company Commander and his total disregard for personal safety together with his magnificent courage has been a source of inspiration to the rest of his Platoon.'
