'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack by 58th Battalion on PERONNE on 2nd September 1918. Before the attack commenced under heavy machine gun fire and shell fire, this N.C.O. went forward on reconnaissance and the valuable information gained by him as to the position of the enemy aided his Company Commander in making his dispositions for the attack. In the attack this N.C.O. led his men with great dash and determination and succeeded in capturing the entire crew of 17 Trench Mortar men. Later in the attack by his dash and determination, single handed he captured a post of 10 men. His splendid leadership enabled his section to bring very effective fire on the enemy inflicting many casualties. His splendid example of leadership and devotion to duty helped greatly in the success of his Company, which secured its final objectives.'
