Military Medal 'Gallantry in the field and devotion to duty. Has done excellent work from 7th to 10th August, 1916, laying and maintaining lines, and assisting to build a buried cable route from TARA HILL to SAUSAGE VALLEY which feeds the two Brigades in the front line. This route has been under shell fire daily and under heavy shell fire on 10th August, 1916. Corporal ARMSTRONG kept his party constantly at work showing determination, a great sense of duty, and a splendid example to his party, by his indifference to the shell fire in open country and under trying conditions. Military Medal awarded 28th August, 1916.'
