Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 3 March 1917; discharged, 25 April 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 54 days.

Proceeded overseas to France, 16 July 1917; taken on strength, 36th Bn, 3 August 1917.

Found guilty, 3 September 1917, of (1) being absent without leave from 8 pm 29 August 1917 until apprehended by MPs at Boulogne at 2.30 pm 30 August 1917; (2) While under arrest insubordinate language in that he at Boulogne said to Sgt Chatworthy when refused to be allowed to enter a cafe: 'A nice --- of an NCO you are.' Awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No 2; total forfeiture 12 days' pay.

Found guilty, 20 September 1917, of when on Active Service (1) Absent without leave from noon 13 September 1917 until apprehended by an MP at Desvres at 8 pm on 16 September 1917; (2) Contravention of Regulation 294 in that he was not carrying a PH Helmet; (3) Being improperly dressed in that he was not wearing a belt or Battalion colours: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2; total forfeiture 18 days' pay.

Admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 October 1917; discharged to duty, 6 April 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 180 days.

Admitted to 39th General Hospital, 7 April 1918; discharged to duty, 1 May 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 25 days.

Admitted to hospital, 11 June 1918; discharged to duty, 25 August 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 76 days.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 26 October 1918: found guilty of being absent without leave from 2100 30 August until apprehended between 2200 and 2300 19 September 1918: awarded 35 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Admitted to 39th General Hospital, 2 December 1918; discharged to duty, 21 December 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 31 days.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 9 April 1919, on charges (1) conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he at Chepy on 4 April 1919 made use of abusive and insolent language to his superior officer; (2) when in confinement at Chepy escaping on 4 April 1919: awarded 6 months' imprisonment with hard labour.

Several further convictions for being absent without leave.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ascanius', 23 September 1919; found guilty, 18 October 1919, of (1) breaking ship at Durban; (2) obscene language; (3) drunkenness: awarded forfeiture of 4 days' pay; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), Sydney, 10 December 1919.
