'He has served with the battery in France continuously since March 1916, having served through the autumn and winter campaign on the Somme in 1916, Ploegsteert, Messines, Nieuport and Menin-road in 1917, and throughout the present offensives. He has always shown marked gallantry and tenacity under fire under most trying circumstances, and by his courage and energy has gained the confidence of all members of the battery.'
