Military Medal

'On the 9th August 1918 near VAUVILLERS, East of VILLERS-BRETONNEUX this man did wonderful work as a stretcher bearer. His Company was exposed during the day to heavy machine gun and shell fire, and it became necessary to take risks in order to rescue the wounded. He showed an utter disregard for his personal safety, and refused to take a rest until the whole of the wounded had been removed to the rear. He made many trips through a very heavy machine gun barrage, and throughout the operation set a splendid example to his fellow bearers.'
