War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Disembarked Alexandria from Mudros, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 25 March 1916. Wounded in action, 30 July 1916 (gun shot wound, right ear and neck); admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 31 July 1916, and transferred to Anzac Rest Station; to No 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 12 August 1916; discharged to Base Depot, 12 August 1916; rejoined unit, 28 August 1916. Appointed Lance corporal, 6 November 1916. On leave to United Kingdom, 15 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 31 March 1918. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 7 May 1918. Proceeded to England for embarkation to Australia, 19 May 1918 (2 months' special leave: family reasons), and reverted to rank of Lance Corporal.
