'At 5pm. 29.9.17 this man was on duty at the Wagon Loading Post, BIRR CROSS ROADS. An enemy incendiary shell had ignited the end truck of a light train loaded with ammunition. Several shells exploded endangering the lives of all in the vicinity including wounded lying at the Loading Post thirty yards away. This man with Sergeant Davies and Private Flack of 14th Australian Field Ambulance uncoupled the remaining wagons and after working 10-15 minutes, during which more shells exploded, separated the remaining trucks from the burning one. This action helped to save life and much destruction that would have followed the complete burning of the train.'
