Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He set a splendid example to his men during an intense enemy bombardment by assisting the wounded and clearing and rebuilding the damaged trenches. He did excellent work, particularly as a patrol leader, on many other occasions.'
