Served at Gallipoli from 25 April 1915; remained on active duty at Gallipoli until 7 September 1915.

Promoted 2nd Lieutenant (temporary), 22 June 1915.

Admitted to H.S. 'Scotian', Gallipoli, 16 August 1915 (bronchitis); developed typhoid and hernia, 25 August 1915. Developed nervous debility: judged temporarily unfit for further service: evacuated to Australia on board 'Kanowna', 20 November 1915, and admitted to 7th Australian General Hospital, Keswick, Adelaide.

Re-embarked with the 16th Bn on board A60 'Aeneas', 17 April 1916.

Promoted 2nd Lieutenant, 1 June 1916.

Disembarked Egypt; proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 7 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 14 June 1916.

Evacuated to England via Calais (neurasthenia), 9 September 1916, and admitted to General Hospital, Denmark Hill, London; discharged to duty, 25 September 1916.

Medical Board found (12 September 1916) that 'he is suffering from Nervous Debility which he first developed at Gallipoli. He has subsequently had Enteric fever, with phlebitis of both legs. He is irritable, depressed and was evacuated from France for these symptoms.'

Restored to establishment of 16th Bn and seconded for duty as Adjutant, 4th Infantry Training Bn, 16 November 1916.

Promoted Lieutenant, 1 January 1917.

Tried by General Court Martial, Tidworth, 2 October 1917, on four charges of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that in June and July 1917 he improperly issued to himself public moneys when his pay account was overdrawn. The charges were upheld, and he was sentenced to be severely reprimanded.

Resumed regimental duty, 4 June 1918. Wounded in action, 4 July 1918 (gun shot wound, abdomen and left buttock). Transferred to England and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 1 August 1918.

Commenced return to Australia, 19 October 1918; disembarked Perth, 16 December 1918. Left Perth by rail in charge of troops, 30 December 1918. Discharged, 10 March 1919.
