'For marked gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations on 8 August, 1918, near Cherisy, east of Corbie. When troops on the left were held up by a machine gun nest, he and Sapper Campbell dashed several hundred yards across the open under intense fire, and caused the enemy to surrender with their two machine guns.'
