Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry during attack o enemy position near ZONNEBEKE on 26th September, 1917. He was in charge of a Lewis gun which he rushed forward into a shell hole in front of our position and though under continuous enemy machine gun fire from higher ground on our front and continually under heavy enemy shell fire, he held his post and when enemy counter attacked, he helped considerably in repulsing them. His conduct was most exemplary and he kept his men in good spirits throughout a trying time and accounted for great number of the enemy.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 31 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'Is recommended for most conspicuous gallantry at LIHU FARM near LIHONS on the morning of 19th August 1918. This N.C.O., was in charge of an advanced Lewis Gun Post with two other members of the gun team, when a strong hostile patrol attempted to raid the post. On his own initiative, and with great courage, he rushed his gun to a flank and handled it so skilfully that he was able to drive off the enemy, killing one officer and two other ranks. Later, he pushed out with a small patrol, and under very heavy enemy Machine Gun fire, brought in the bodies from which important identification was obtained.'
