War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to 54th Bn from 1st Training Bn, Zeitoun, 16 February 1916; joined 54th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916. Fell out of line en route between Tel el Kebir and Ferry Post and transported to 5th Division Detail Camp, 27 March 1916; admitted to No 1 New Zealand Station Hospital, Ismailia, 28 March 1916 (heat stroke); discharged to duty, 31 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19/20 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19/20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 911001, 4321 Pte T. THORPE, B Company, 54th Bn (patient, No 26 General Hospital, Etaples), 4 December 1916: 'They [DEVOS and 4166 G. CLAPPERTON] were killed at Fleurbaix on July 19th ...
