Joined 2nd Bn, Tel el Kebir, 5 February 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 March 1916; promoted Lance Corporal, at sea, 24 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 28 March 1916.

Detached to 2nd Army Grenade School, 6 June 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 11 June 1916.

Wounded in action, Pozieres, France, 25 July 1916 (shell wounds, leg, thigh, jaw), and admitted to 1st Field Ambulance; transferred to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 27 July 1916; to England, 1 August 1916, and admitted to 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff, 2 August 1916 (shell wounds, face, left wrist and left leg, fractured fuibula and lower jaw: severe).

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Karoola', 16 October 1916; disembarked Melbourne, 2 December 1916, for onward travel by train to Sydney; discharged (medically unfit), Sydney, 29 May 1917.
