Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations at PERONNE on 1st and 2nd September 1918. This man, as a stretcher-bearer, worked continuously and arduously throughout the whole operation under the most trying circumstances. His coolness and devotion to duty under exceptionally heavy artillery and machine gun fire was greatly admired by his comrades and a good example was set thereby. His first aid and careful handling of the wounded tended greatly to alleviate their sufferings. He continuously carried men from very dangerous positions without any regard to his own personal safety. On his return journeys from the R. Aid Post he never came empty handed, he carried water and rations to men of his unit, which was greatly appreciated.'
