War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Taken on strength, 30th Bn, in the field, 6 August 1916. Found guilty, 11 June 1917, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, i.e. using shell hole water for washing purposes: awarded 7 days' Field Punishmwent No 2. On leave to England, 9 January 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 25 January 1918. Found guilty, 6 March 918, of overstaying leave in the United Kingdom from 7 am, 21 January, to 7 am, 24 January 1918: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2. On leave to Paris, 18 November 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 24 November 1918. Marched out for return to Australia, 2 April 1919. Admitted to 39th General Hospital, Havre, 5 April 1919 (not yet diagnosed); discharged to Base Depot, 8 April 1919 (scabies). Embarked for England, 9 April 1919; marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 10 April 1919.
