Found guilty, Parkhouse, 5 August 1916, of being absent without leave, 12.00 pm, 26 July, to 9.30 pm, 3 August 1916: awarded 9 days' detention; forfeited total of 16 days' pay. Proceeded to France through Folkestone on SS 'Princess Henrietta', 14 November 1916; marched into Machine Gun Depot, Etaples, 15 November 1916; taken on strength of 5th Machine Gun Company, 25 November 1916.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 28 December 1916, and transferred to Anzac Company Rest Station (feet debilitation); discharged to duty, 13 January 1917; rejoined unit, 15 January 1917; temporarily promoted to rank T/Corporal, 16 April 1917; demoted to rank of Lance Corporal, 1 June 1917.
