Embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 5 April 1915. Admitted to Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 14 August 1915 (bronchitis); transferred to Mudros; thence to Malta and admitted to St George's Hospital, 27 August 1915; to All Saints' Convalescent Camp, 31 August 1915. Embarked for Mudros, 15 November 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 4 December 1915, and admitted to Overseas Base, Ghezireh; rejoined Bn, Tel el Kebir, 31 December 1915.

Appointed Temporary Regimental Sergeant Major, 1 January 1916; Temporary Company Sergeant Major, 31 January 1916. Transferred to 56th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916; promoted Regimental Sergeant Major with the rank of Warrant Officer Class I.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 29 June 1916. Absent on leave, 26 September 1916; rejoined Bn, 8 October 1916.

To Gas School of Instruction, 30 January 1917; rejoined Bn, 4 February 1917. To Divisional Infantry School, 18 February 1917; rejoined Bn, 27 March 1917.
