The AIF Project

'On the night of 31st August attempts were being made to force a passage across the canal and marshes of the SOMME south of PERONNE. The passage of the canal was accomplished without much difficulty but the trouble commenced with the endeavour to traverse the marsh which varied from 500 to 1000 yards. After floundering about for a considerable time and trying various routes the patrol of which Sergeant DOW was a member had to give up the effort as impracticable. A bridge having been constructed by the engineers to give access to the Eastern edge of the marsh, Sergeant DOW volunteered next day for a second effort. The fighting patrol had proceeded some distance along the bridge when the enemy opened fire on them at point blank range with machine guns and a 77 mm. field gun inflicting many casualties. Sergeant DOW persevered in the effort in spite of the opposition with great coolness and courage he succeeded in bringing back his party, carrying the wounded with them. His fine example of courage and leadership had a most inspiring effect on the rest of the party and is deserving of recognition.'
