'On the 3rd October, 1918, in the attack on the BEAUREVOIR SYSTEM, near the village of BEAUREVOIR East of PERONNE, it was necessary to withdraw to a position which was exposed to machine gun fire. Lance Corporal ADAMS volunteered to deliver a despatch of great importance explaining our position to Headquarters. Although under heavy machine gun fire both going and returning, he successfully delivered the message and returned with instructions.'
