Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the advance was held up by an enemy strong point he organized a party, and, by a brilliant movement, though under heavy shell and machine gun fire, captured the strong point with fifteen prisoners and two machine guns. After the capture of the final objective it was partly due to his fine selection of fire positions that two counter attacks were beaten off. He rendered invaluable service to the battalion by his cheerfulness and coolness, and by his skill in organizing his sector of the line.'
