Embarked on 'Ballarat', 16 February 1916; disembarked Egypt, 22 March 1916. Joined 54th Bn at Ferry Post, 1 April 1916. Embarked H.T. 'Caledonian' to Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. To hospital from unit 23 August 1916; admitted to 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 25 August 1916 (sciatic); transferred to No. 7 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne; to 5th Division Base Depot, Etaples, 18 September 1916. Taken on strength 14th Australian Machine Gun Company, 5th Machine Gun Bn, 20 October 1916.

Admitted to 51st General Hospital, sick not yet dignosed, 17 November 1916; transferred to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, (severe dermatitis). Rejoined unit, 3 February 1917. Admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance, 20 March 1917; transferred to 45th Casualty Clearing Station, 25 March 1917; to 27th Ambulance Train, 27 March 1917; to 9th General Hospital, Rouen, 28 March 1917. Invalided to England on HS 'Londonderry', 17 April 1917, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham (severe trench fever); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 4 May 1917. Granted furlough, 8-23 May 1917. To No. 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, England, 23 June 1917. To Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 27 July 1917. Foud guilty of being absent without leave from Tattoo from 10 August 1917 'until apprehended by Civil Police Nottingham on 19 August 1917: admonished and forfeited 10 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone, England; rejoining unit at Camiers, 6 October 1917.

Evacuated to 15th Casualty Clearing Station, 23 December 1917; sent on to No. 25 General Hospital, Boulogne, for eight weeks (skin disorder). On 5 February 1918, To Machine Gun Base Depot, Camiers, 5 February 1918. Admitted to 20th General Hospital, Etaples, 27 February 1918, 'with eczema all over his legs. 'Over a period of nearly 12 months has been treated for all sorts of skin diseases.' Transferred to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 3 March 1918; to 1st War Hospital, Birmingham, England; then to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England, where patient had 'pleurisy', 29 March 1918. The condition was attributed to 'service during [the] present war.'

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Gaika', 19 April 1918; disembarked Sydney, 5 July 1918; discharged, 29 August 1918.
