War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front. Taken on strength 9th Bn, 22 June 1915, at Anzac. Disembarked Alexandria from Murdos, 4 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Admitted to3rd Field Ambulance, 25 January 1916 (dental); discharged to unit for duty, 26 January 1916; rejoined unit, Serapeum, 3 March 1916'. Embarked Alexandria to join British Expeditionary Force, 27 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 3 April 1916. Found guilty of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, failure to attend parade at the time ordered: awarded 1 day's Field Punishment No. 2. Appointed Lance Corporal, 6 August 1916. Wounded in action, 21 August 1916 (gunshot wound, back).. Transferred on HS 'Brighton to England, 14 September 1916. Admitted to 1st Auxilary Hospital, Harefild, England, 3 October 1916; to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 25 December 1916. Foud guilty of being absent, 1800 hours, 19 February, to 1500 hours, 20 February 1917: severely reprimanded and forfeited 2 days' pay. Marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 March 1917.
