'During the operations near Bellicourt on 29 September, 1918, he displayed great courage and devotion to duty under heavy machine gun and artillery fire at point blank range. After the platoon commander and sergeant had been wounded, and many casualties had occurred, he, who was acting as company sergeant major, reorganized the remainder of the platoon. He then collected and removed the wounded to a place of safety, and remained until every man had been accounted for. Throughout the whole operation he set a very fine example to his men.'
