Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty near VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 3rd May, 1918, when in charge of a Lewis gun team. In spite of heavy casualties from enemy fire he saw that his gun and ammunition got through safely. When the "mopping up" party were at work he posted his gun and maintained his position under heavy machine gun fire putting at least one enemy gun out of action and causing many casualties. He kept his gun in action and covered the retirement of his party until almost surrounded and then succeeded in getting it back intact to our lines although under heavy fire all the time. His coolness and bravery were magnificent under very trying circumstances.'
