War service: Egypt, Western Front. Joined Mediterran Expeditionary Force, 1 March 1915. Found guilty of (1) On 30 September 1915, at Zateriah, Egypt, conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline: awarded 1 day's Field Punishment No 2;. (2) On 5 October 1915, at Zalria, Egypt, absent from duty from 0920 to 1035: awarded stoppage of one week's leave; (3) On 5 November 1915, in Egypt, for failing to appear for parades at place appointed by his Commanding Officer:awarded 1 day's Field Punishment No 2. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force; disembarked Marseilles, 29 March 1916. Taken on strength, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, in France, 15 May 1916. Hospitalised, 12 July 1916, with a broken jaw; Commanding Officer states 'this man was on duty at the time of accident and is in no way to blame'. Admitted to No 3 London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England, 19 July 1916. Marched in to No 3 Command Depot, Woolwich, from No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, England. A Court of Inquiry is noted in the record but neither date nor place identified. Proceeded overseas to France, 12 December 1917. To hospital, sick, 17 February 1918; discharged to Base Depot from Line of Communication and admitted with venereal disease. Discharged to duty, 1 June 1918: total period of treatment for venereal disease: 34 days.
