War service: taken on strength, 15th Bn, Tel-el-Kebir, 6 March 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 8 June 1916. Found guilty in London, 29 June 1917, of being absent without leave, 29 June-12 July 1917: awarded forfeiture of 21 days' pay. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 14 September 1917, of desertion, 26-27 August 1917: sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude. Admitted to 3rd Military Prison, Havre, 9 November 1917; sentence commuted to 2 years' penal servitude. Released and remainder of sentence suspended, 22 December 1917. Admitted to 13th Field Ambulance, 26 January 1918 (pyrexia); rejoined Bn, 4 February 1918. Wounded in action, 1 March 1918 (gun shot wound, chest); transferred to England, 11 March 1918 (severe wound), and admitted to Brook War Hospital, Woolwich. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 28 March 1918. Granted furlough, 17 April-1 May 1918, to report to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott. Proceeded overseas to France, 24 July 1918; rejoined unit, 1 August 1918. Attached to Permanent Cadre of Overseas Training Brigade, 3 December 1918.
