'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. When his company commander became a casualty he though wounded in the leg, took over command, and led the company forward to its final objeective. Throughout the consolidation he showed great pluck and cheerfulness, and said no word of his wound until his leg became so stiff that he had to be carried away.'
