'At VILLE-SUR-ANCRE near ALBERT on the night of 14th/15th June, 1918, this N.C.O. was a member of a raiding party consisting of 1 Officer and 48 other ranks. DYER as No. 1 of a Lewis Gun ream took up a position with his gun and by well directed covering fire inflicted casualties on the retreating enemy, and later prevented enemy reinforcements from coming up. Although wounded he engaged an enemy Machine Gun which was very active against the raiders and successfully neutralised its fire. On returning to our lines he was again wounded. He displayed great courage and initiative.'
