Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 16 August 1915. Found guilty, 25 October 1915, of late fo fatigue parade, 22 October 1915: awarded 2 days' Field Punishment No 2. Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, Gallipoli, 5 December 1915; transferred to 24th Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros, 10 December 1915 (septic leg); to 87th Field Ambulance, Mudros, 16 December 1915; discharged to duty, 27 December 1915; returned to duty, 'A' Company, 18th Bn, Tel el Kebir, Egypt, 10 January 1916.

Admitted to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, Ferry Post, 4 February 1916 (contusion of leg); discharged to duty, 13 February 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 25 March 1916.

Admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, 30 April 1916 (injury to ankle); transferred to 8th Casualty Clearing Station, 2 May 1916; by Ambulance Train No 16 to 26th General Hospital, 2 May 1916 (Potts fracture); transferred to England, 18 May 1916. 'Injury: sprained left ankle caused by twist of foot whilst running alongside a runaway horse. Disability of a trivial nature & in all probablity will not interfere with future efficiency as soldier. Claimant on duty at time of accident.' Admitted to North Evington Hospital (date not recorded); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 29 May 1916; to Woodcote Park Hospital, Epsom, 27 June 1916; discharged to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 14 August 1916, and proceeded on furlough.

Found guilty, 8 June 1917, of (1) neglecting to obey Routine Order 1609 of 20.1.17 (2) absent without leave from Tattoo roll call, 30 May, to 5.40 am, 31 May 1917: awarded 2 days' confined to camp and forfeited 1 day's pay.

Detached to 9th Training Bn, Durrington, 11 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Morvada', 4 January 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 20 February 1919, for onward travel by boat to Sydney; discharged, Sydney, 25 March 1919.
