Military Medal

'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty at ROSIERES on 11th August, 1918. The enemy put down a heavy gas shell and H.E. bombardment and set fire to a row of marquees in the captured C.C.S. then occupied as a Dressing Station by 2nd Australian Field Ambulance. A truck load of gas shells standing opposite to the post was struck and began to explode. Private EATON working in his respirator at once set to work to extinguish the fire regardless of the continuous bombardment and the shells flying in all directions from the burning truck. He promptly let go all the ropes of the adjoining tent and threw water on the next tent and in this way managed to limit the extent of the fire and kept it from extending to the hut where his officer had many wounded lying. After this he rendered great assistance in removing wounded to a place of safety. During the whole of the time he was conspicuous among the bearers for his cool bearing and prompt action in the face of danger and by his energy and devotion to the wounded he set an example which stimualted all the bearers around and enabled the Officer in charge to evacuate all his cases from this dangerous position.'
