Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and able reconnaissance work in action, and notably when in command of a carrying party, which made three endeavours to reach a post, under very heavy shell and machine gun fire, during which he was severely wounded.'

He carried out a daylight reconnaissance into "No Man's Land" to break some enemy minenwerfer, and, under heavy machine gun fire, brought one back. Going out again later, he destroyed three minenwerfer with bombs. Next day, in preparation for a minor operation, he made another daylight reconnaissance under constant fire, and returned with valuable information.'
