'On 3rd and 4th September, 1916, near MOUAUET FARM, when his part of the trench was under heavy shell fire, this N.C.O. did excellent work in keeping the men steady. He further encouraged them to keep digging during the shell fire and by doing so undoubtedly prevented many casualties. on one occasion though slightly wounded himself and badly shaken he set to work with great energy and dug out some men who were buried by shell fire.'
