MM Bar

'Is brought under notice for the gallant and able manner in which he carried out his duties during operations near ZONNEBEKE on the 26th September, 1917, and for conspicuous bravery during the relief of the Battalion on the night of 28th September, 1917. On the morning of the 26th September, 1917, this N.C.O. was in charge of a Lewis machine gun section. During the attack, and later when holding the line under very bad shell fire, he was a model of coolness and good judgment. He showed the utmost contempt for danger and was unfailingly devoted to his duty. On the relief of the Battalion on the night of the 28th September, 1917, as his Company was nearing WESTHOEK RIDGE his platoon was caught in a barrage in which three were killed and ten wounded. He without hesitation remained behind attending to the casualties and transferring them to the nearest Dressing Station. His action in remaining behind was a very brave one as continuous shelling took place for an hour in this area. His prompt action in disposing of wounded and in providing cover for the men on this occasion undoubtedly saved many lives. He once again maintained the high standard of courage which previously won for him the Military Medal. He is strongly recommended for distinction.'
