Proceeded to join Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 16 August 1915; promoted to rank of Corporal, 28 August 1915; promoted to rank of Company Quarter Master Sergeant, 9 October 1915.

Disembarked Alexandria from Mudros, 9 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Embarked Alexandria and proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force, 20 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 27 March 1916. Severely reprimanded, 31 March 1916, for breaking ship.

Admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, 27 July 1916 (gun shot wound, right hand); transferred to 1st Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 28 July 1916. Embarked Calais on HS 'Newhaven' and proceeded to England, 2 August 1916, and admitted to 3rd Southern General Hospital; discharged to 5th Training Battalion, Rollestone, 2 October 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 7 October 1916; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 9 October 1915; marched out to 13th Battalion, 22 October 1916, and taken on strength, 23 October 1916. Transferred to 18th Bn, 24 November 1916, and taken on strength, 25 November 1916; posted for duty with 5th Training Bn, 1 September 1917; marched into 5th Bn, 6 September 1917, and attached for permanent duty with 5th Training Battalion Cadre, Tidworth; promoted to rank of ER/C Quarter Master Sergeant, 18 September 1917; resumed rank of C Quarter Master, 31 March 1918. Embarked Dover and proceeded to France, 1 April 1918; disembarked Calais, 1 April 1918, and marched into Overflow Camp; marched out, 9 April 1918; rejoined 18th Bn and taken on strength, 11 April 1918.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 June 1918 (boils); transferred to 61st Casualty Clearing Station, 9 June 1918; to 3rd General Hospital, 9 June 1918; admitted to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Havre, 12 July 1918; discharged to Australian Imperial Base Depot, Havre, 8 August 1918; moved out, 12 August 1918; rejoined unit, 15 August 1918; moved out from field, 24 January 1919.
