Disembarked Suez, 2 May 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 8 June 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 25 July 1916; taken on strength, 3rd Bn, 3 August 1916.

On Command, 1st Australian Division School of Instruction, 28 November 1916; rejoined Bn, 31 March 1917.

Appointed 2nd Lt, 23 July 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 21 August 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 5 September 1917. To 1st Australian Division Reinforcements Camp during operations, 13 September 1917; rejoined Bn, 5 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, right knee); admitted to 20th General Hospital, Camiers, 5 October 1917; transferred to England, 15 October 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital (gun shot wound, right knee). Promoted Lt, 1 December 1917. Discharged to duty, 10 December 1917; marched in to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 11 December 1917; marched out to Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, 15 December 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 29 December 1917; rejoined Bn, 10 January 1918.
