'For conspicuous gallantry during capture of part of HINDENBURG Line on 3rd May 1917, capturing a German post held by superior numbers. Later he made a gallant stand on the left flank until forced to fall back by heavy artillery. This N.C.O.'s work was most valuable for the consolidation of the captured trenches.'
