War service: embarked Sydney, 9 November 1915; disembarked Suez, 11 December 1915. Rejoined unit, Tel-el-Kebir, from 8th Field Ambulance, 16 January 1916. Found guilty of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, 22 February 1916: awarded 10 hours' punishment drill in the afternoon. Transferred to 5th Division Artillery, taken on strength, mustered as a Gunner and posted to 58th Battery, 15 March 1916.

Embarked from Alexandria with 5th Divisional Base Depot Artillery Reinforcements, 7 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 15 June 1916.

Moved out to active service from 5th Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 6 August 1916; taken on strength, 15th Field Artillery Brigade in the field, 10 August 1916. Transferred to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 27 January 1917. Admitted to hospital sick (influenza), 1 February 1917; discharged to duty, 6 February 1917. Admitted to 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, England (tonsillitis), 14 September 1917; discharged to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 24 October 1917, having been treated 40 days for venereal disease. Underwent a further 9 days' VD treatment, 30 October-7 November 1917. Marched into No. Convalescent Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, 11 November 1917.
