'East of WESTHOEK on 19th October, 1917, No. 20219 Corporal William James EVANS was in charge of a column of three ammunition wagons proceeding to a Battery when he came under a heavy hostile barrage. he continued to move forward until he had his eye blown out and two mules killed. He refused to go to the dressing station until the dead mules were pulled off the road and the wagons turned round with teams hooked in ready to move off again. When this was done he handed the teams over to Driver LONGWORTH as he was nearly blind in the other eye and unable to carry on any further. The gallant action of this N.C.O. is deserving of special recognition. Awarded Military Medal 2nd November, 1917.'
