War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to No 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, Tel el Kebir, 11 July 1916 (diarrhoea); discharged to duty, 13 July 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 2 August 1916; disembarked England (date not recorded). Marched in to 2nd Division Base, Etaples, from England, 2 October 1916; taken on strength, 49th Bn, in the field, 17 October 1916. On leave, 22 November 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 10 December 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 8 January 1918. Found guilty, 14 January 1918, of being absent without leave from 9 pm, 11 January, until reporting back at 11.30 am, 12 January 1918: reprimanded, and forfeited 2 days' pay.
