Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's defences North East of SAILLY-le-SEC. Although severely burned about the face and body by a shell which burst close to him on the assembly position, Private FARRELL went forward when the signal was given, carrying his Lewis gun through the heavy Machine Gun and trench mortar barrage which swept No Mans Land. brave, determined, and without heeding the pain of his injuries, he pushed on until the objective was reached. He took up a position on the flank, and protected the raiders throughout the operation, by sweeping with fire from his gun, the enemy posts to the flank. The operation successfully concluded, he withdrew with the others to our lines, and was evacuated. His courage and devotion to duty in face of great danger was a marked feature of the operation.'
