'On 4th October, 1917, when in charge of a stretcher squad working in the neighbourhood of ZONNEBEKE conducted himself in a singularly gallant manner. For 30 hours he continuously carried wounded through heavy shell fire. His coolness and courage were a splendid example to the men under his charge.'
