Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations against enemy positions south of the SOMME, east of HAMEL on 8th August, 1918. During the attack on ACCROCHE WOOD and afterwards C.S.M. AVERY displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in assisting his Company Commander to reorganise the Company during a very difficult advance and keep them together. He carried a spare Lewis Gun throughout the advance though heavily loaded with other stores. Throughout the entire operation he displayed fine leadership and by his bravery and fine fighting spirit inspired all with whom he came into contact.'
