'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On two occasions he dispersed enemy patrols and captured prisoners and displayed great initiative and skill. During an attack he showed splendid courage and determination, and after the capture of the enemy's trenches he held a post single handed when all his men had become casualties.'
