'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a Medium Trench Mortar at Villers Bretonneux at 3 a.m. on the 2nd June 1918, the enemy placed an intense barrage of H.E. and gas on the position. Bombardier Fletcher led his detachment in spite of the barrage and removed the gun and ammunition. Gas helmets had to be worn continually. The building in which the mortar was in position was in flames and a direct hit had been obtained on the ammunition.'

Embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 13 June 1916. Found guilty of disobeying a lawful command and usiny theateniny language to a superior, 27 June 1916: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No. 2.

Admitted to 1 Australian Dermatological Hospital (haemmorrhoids), while on leave in England, 10 October 1917; discharged, 30 November 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 2 Januarg 1918; rejoined unit, 10 Januarg 1918. Proceeded to AIF Headquarters, London, for special transport duty to Australia, 11 June 1918. Commenced return to Australia, 17 June 1918.

Re-embarked from Sydney on board SS 'Capentaria', 7 November 1918, as part of 25th New South Wales Reinforcements; ship recalled on account of the Armistice; transferred to 'Riverina' in New Zealand; disembarked in Sydney, 27 December 1918.
