'During operations east of JEANCOURT on 18th September, 1918, Corporal GARDINER displayed great dash and initiative. In the face of heavy machine gun fire, he rushed forward and captured - single handed - a gun and crew which was holding up the advance near GRAND PRIEL WOOD.'
