Military Medal 'On the night of 19th/20th December, 1915, the final night of the evacuation of Anzac, Pte Gemmill was one of C 3 party of 22nd Battalion. This party consisted of two officers and 17 men who garrisoned about 800 yards of trenches opposite Johnston's Jolly whilst earlier parties were embarking. During this period Gemmill walked along [the] trench firing from different loop holes giving [the] enemy the impression that [the] trench was manned as usual. Since coming to France with No. 2 Pioneer Battalion, Cpl Gemmill has shown great coolness, courage and resourcefulness whilst working under shell fire on several occasions.' |
