War service: enlisted, Sydney, New South Wales, 29 August 1914; embarked for overseas, 13 October 1914. Egypt: found guilty of refusing to obey a lawful command of his superior; awarded three days' Field Punishment No. 2, 24 September 1915. Underwent 20 days' treatment for venereal disease, Dermatological Hospital, Cairo, 8-27 March 1916. Taken on strength, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 39th Battery, Tel-el-Kebir, 27 March 1916. Proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force: embarked Alexandria, 5 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 13 June 1916. On leave from the field, 21 November-8 December 1917. Transferred from 10th Field Artillery Brigade to 4th Division Ammunition Column, 6 January 1918. Treated by 1st Field Ambulance for scabies, 9-14 January 1918; transferred back to 39th Battery, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, 14 March 1918. Transferred to England for return to Australia, 5 September 1918. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 9-10 September 1918: admonished and ordered to forfeit two days' pay. Returned to Australia on board D23 (submarine guard duty), 23 September 1918; arrived in Sydney, 26 November 1918. Discharged, 26 January 1919.
