'At VILLE-SUR-ANCRE near ALBERT this man displayed the greatest courage and gallantry in the operation on morning of 19th May, 1918. During the mopping-up of the village he dashed across the open, and engaged a party of the enemy single-handed who were holding up the advance. He personally killed three of the enemy and dispersed the remainder. Later he showed splendid courage and initiative in crawling up to a house under fire, and successfully bombing the post.'
