Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Demosthenes', 18 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 20 July 1916.

Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 21 October 1916.

Found guilty of being absent without leave, 12.00 am, 4 November, to 4.00 pm, 4 November 1916: awarded fine of 3 days' pay; forfeited total of 4 days' pay; to be Lance Corporal, 5 November 1916.

Proceeded to France through Folkestone on SS 'Princess Clementine', 12 January 1917; marched into 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 15 January 1917; taken on strength of 41st Bn, 19 January 1917; moved into the field, 15 January 1917; rank reverts to Private at own request, 27 January 1917.

Admitted to 5th Dressing Station, 27 February 1917, and transferred to 9th Australian Field Ambulance (gun shot wound, left thigh and elbow); to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, 27 February 1917; to Ambulance Train '10', 27 February 1917; admitted to 14th General Hospital, Boulogne, 6 February 1917. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'St. Denis' and proceeded to England for further treatment, 10 March 1917; admitted to Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot, 11 March 1917; released on furlough, 4 August 1917. Moved into 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 13 August 1917; discharged to duty, 10 September 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ulysees', 10 September 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 13 November 1917, for onward travel to 1st Military District. Discharged Brisbane, 29 January 1918.
